Bisphenol A (BPA) is used to make the polycarbonate plastic we find everywhere – from sports equipment to DVD’s, CD’s, reusable drink and food containers (which we are avoiding too, right?).
It is also used in the lining of canned foods sold off of store shelves every day.
In addition, BPA is used as a synthetic sex hormone.
In the May 18, 2010 report Senator Feinstein, others demand BPA ban in Food Safety Bill, the first paragraph includes this statement:
“BPA is a synthetic sex hormone and exposure to low doses has been linked to abnormal behavior, diabetes and heart disease, infertility, developmental and reproductive harm, and obesity, which raises the risk of early puberty, a known risk factor for breast cancer.”
Canned foods were tested in independent laboratories. Included in the testing were varied name brand canned vegetables, soups, sodas, milk products, beans, fish and fruits. Cans tested were from both store purchases and actual home participant pantries.
BPA toxins are not welcome at the dining table, but canned foods provide countless affordable, realistic and easy meal options for many families.
FACT:
One can of green beans tested showed a BPA level at 1,140 parts per billion – the highest level of BPA ever found in a canned food.
The plastic liner on metal lids for glass jars ALSO contain BPA’s – any food in the jar which comes in contact with the liner is at risk for contamination.
(SOME) SILVER LINING: One company not using the BPA contaminated lining in their canning process is Eden Organics. Eden carries a variety of canned foods. What is interesting is that Eden Organics switched to non-BPA containing liners based on a study on BPA dangers back in 1997!
Although Eden’s tomato and tomato-based products are still canned in the cans with BPA liners, this is solely due to the fact that the only liner that is currently approved by the FDA for high-acidity foods like tomatoes and tomato products are the liners made with BPA. Basically, Eden Organics has their hands tied on this one until further restrictions on BPA liners in canning are put officially into place. Overall, Eden Organics is doing all they can to create and provide the best products for their customers.
Yet another great reason to visit your farmer’s market for those green beans…
