FARM – FOOD – COOKING – DINE
The day will begin in Menemsha with an intimate tour of our little fishing village. We will learn about an industry that is held so dear to Martha’s Vineyard natives, and the challenges faced in our modern food climate. Our visit will help to educate on how we can make a difference in our food systems by the choices we make at the market or grocery store. We will learn about fish, clams, and the finest lobsters.
After our fishing village excursion, we will make our way to North Tabor Farm in Chilmark. On the farm, we will learn about the life of a small New England farmer. We will spend the day gathering together. From fresh vegetables, tomatoes, and the endless bounty of the island, we will be immersed in providing our own nourishment.
On the farm, we will experience first-hand the systems behind organic farming, growing, and living. After our gathering ingredients for our lunch, we will prepare a delicious family-style meal including cold soup, nourishing ratatouille, and pan-seared fish to enjoy as a group*. All will be savored as we sit and eat together and reflect on our experiences of the morning.
*The menu will specifically reflect what we harvest that morning.
North Tabor Farm is a small diverse family farm, owned and operated by Rebecca Miller and Matthew Dix since 1994 at their property on North Road in Chilmark. North Tabor is perhaps best known for its gourmet blend “salad mix” and shiitake mushrooms, they also provide restaurants, markets, the North Tabor Farm stand, and caterers with a wide range of specialty vegetables, cut flowers, and pastured, organically fed chickens. In addition to growing high quality crops, Rebecca and Matthew mentor young farmers as they contemplate farming as a career. North Tabor Farm has begun collaborating with island caterers to offer private tours. Rebecca and Matthew are passionate about small scale farming, sharing their knowledge, and using local food production to enhance the fabric of the island community.
