Wild Turkey or Kombucha?

by Jan on January 10, 2010

I recently had major surgery and my biggest concern about the surgery was what food to bring with me to the hospital.

The day before my surgery, I could only drink clear liquids and so I pulled out my juicer and made a blend of fresh juiced organic apples, carrots, beets, celery and parsley.

Being deprived of solid foods, I found myself fantasizing about what I would eat after the surgery.

I gathered foods that are simple.  Quick, nourishing foods that will sooth my soul, aid in healing AND are easy to pack in a cooler.

one can of organic white canola beans

chopped garlic

a massive amount of parsley

fresh squeezed organic lemon juice

extra virgin olive oil

salt

Smashed yams

smashed butternut squash

~ and just before I went out the door, I grabbed:

my kombucha stored in a recycled Wild Turkey bottle

The color is perfectly matched to bourbon and think how entertaining this will be when the nurses see this sitting next to my bed!

My surgery lasted longer than expected and it wasn’t until the day after my surgery that I was offered anything to eat. But when I was, I was served a tray containing:

  • a small envelope with “cinnamon apple oats” typed across it
  • a cup of hot water
  • one cup of tea with a packet of sugar
  • a small container of ultra pasteurized half and half
  • a ginger ale.

Wow, I had no idea it could be so depressing!

I asked a nurse to help me get me my private stash of kombucha which was stored in a cabinet across the room.

She wasn’t convinced of my story behind the Wild Turkey bottle.

When I offered her some, she was fearful and declined.  The resident “team” of doctors in training who checked on me the following day, all lined up for it, and were more than curious.  They all listened to the story about kombucha and all of them tried it.

I never did open the cooler of food, but I did go home with an empty Wild Turkey bottle!
